If Grindhouse is supposed to pay homage to low-budget cult films of the 70’s, well, Planet Terror seems to fulfill the assignment while Death Proof simply doesn’t. If not, well… then Planet Terror is still the better movie.
I am surprised to hear Death Proof is considered the better film by far and that not only will it be appearing at Cannes without Planet Terror, it will also be expanded.
Planet Terror: 8.5. Simply entertaining.
Death Proof: 7.7. Incessant exaggerated dialogue detracts from overall experience. In the very few “grindhouse genre” films I did see growing up, I don’t recall half as much dialogue. Pseudo-intellectuals will herald the writing as outstanding in an effort to appear smarter, don’t buy it.
Best Trailer: Machete. Bad cuts, bad writing and bad acting, everything that’s good about these types of movies.
Lamest Trailer: Eli Roth’s Don’t and Thanksgiving. Neither seemed funny or entertaining, just annoying.
